• Regular assessments throughout both years of the GCSE course
November 2018: two history Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) focused two of the papers studied at GCSE
Early June 2019: public examination dates (based on the provisional dates given for 2018)

Areas of study:


Paper 1: Medicine in Britain, c1250-present and the British sector of the Western Front, 1914-18: injuries, treatment and the trenches (THEMATIC STUDY and HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT) – studied in Year 10


Option 11: students study the history of medicine with particular focus on ideas about the causes of disease and illness; approaches to prevention and treatment; and Case Studies of key indidual and / or major events. The course is split into four sections focusing medieval medicine; the Medical Renaissance; medicine in the 18th and 19th centuries and medicine in modern Britain. The second section of this exam focuses on medicine the First World War. For this part of the examination, students will be expected to examine a series of sources to reach judgements about this period of medicine.


Paper 2: SuperPower realtions and the Cold War, 1941-91 and Henry VIII and his ministers, 1509-40 (PERIOD STUDY and BRITISH DEPTH STUDY) – studied in Year 10 and start of Year 10


Option 26/27: students study the Cold War in three Key Topics. The first focused on the orgins of the Cold War from the end of the Second World War and the increasing tension between East and West; the second on three major Cold War Crises including Berlin and the building of the Wall, Czechoslovakia and the Prague Spring and the Cuban Missile Crisis; and the third on the end of the Cold War with focus on the roles of Carter, Brezhnev, Reagan and Gorbachev.


Option B3: students study the reign of the Henry VIII in three Key Topics. The first focused on Henry VIII and his relationsip with Thomas Wolsey; the second focused on Henry VIII’s relationship with Thomas Cromwell; and the third focused on the imapct of the English Reformation and the role played by Henry VIII and his chief minsters.


Paper 3: Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-39 (MODERN DEPTH STUDY) – studied in Year 11


Option 31: students study Germany in the interwar period in four Key Topics. The first focused on the Weimar Republic including Germany after the First World War and the challenges and recovery of the Republic. The second focused on the rise of the Nazi Party and the role played by Hitler; the third focused on Hitler’s dictatorship and ways in which he controlled Nazi Germany; and the fourth and final Key Topic on Nazi domestic policy with particuarly attention paid to the lives of women, the young, employment and the persecution of minorities.

THREE externally examined papers (see dates above)

1 hour 15 minutes – 30%


5 questions – demonstrating knowledge, understanding and analysis of sources; choice given for one of the questions


52 marks – 36 for THEMATIC STUDY and 16 for HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT


Paper 2: SuperPower realtions and the Cold War, 1941-91 and Henry VIII and his ministers, 1509-40 (PERIOD STUDY and BRITISH DEPTH STUDY)


1 hour 45 minutes – 40%


PERIOD STUDY – 3 questions demonstrating knowledge and understanding


BRITISH DEPTH STUDY – one three-part question demonstrating knowledge and understanding; choice given for one of the parts


64 marks – 32 for PERIOD STUDY and 32 for BRITISH DEPTH STUDY


Paper 3: Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-39 (MODERN DEPTH STUDY)


1 hour 20 minutes – 30%

Two sections – A: one source and one knowledge questions; B: one four-part question demonstrating analaysis of two sources and two interpreations - 52 marks
